Alternative Field Trip information for classes taught by Elzbet Diaz de Leon

The following is not intended to replace a discussion with me .

Please discuss details with me in person or by email at elzbet@vcccd.net

  1. Alternative field work  includes the number of hours spent on course work by field trip participants plus the round-trip travel time to the site from VC.  Students doing an alternative field trip may include their own travel time up to the amount of time indicated as the travel time for the class field trip.  For instance if we spend 6 hours doing field work and 6 hours on round trip travel to the field site you owe 12 hours.  Up to 6 of that can be travel time to your own field site.

  1. An alternative field trip must relate to the subject matter of the scheduled field trip.  Exceptions may be made with the instructor’s consent for other subjects that are also included in the course.

  1. Documentation of an alternative field trip must include a journal of the times and activities and signed verification by someone approved of by the instructor. (for example: a park ranger or docent) This may be waived for independent projects that produce a gradable product.

  1. Unless the trip is guided by a verifiable trained expert on the topic it must include some kind of field project. Projects might be a field journal, a lesson plan, an art portfolio, an annotated species list, interviews, or a presentation. Projects will be graded and may not receive full credit.

  1. To receive credit for alternative fieldwork you need to present the instructor with a written proposal.  The proposal should include information about the trip destination, justification of the subject matter, and plans for meeting the documentation and/or project requirements. I would be happy to help you design your field trip if you want help.  A proposal may be turned down, or require modification, therefore it is wise to submit the proposal before you do the work.

  1. If all forms of off-campus travel would be an exceptional hardship meet with me to discuss on-campus possibilities.  Be prepared to supply EAC documentation if required.

7. Unless you are informed otherwise alternative field assignments are due the last week of classes at the last class meeting before finals begin.
