Will Cowen begins his first season as an assistant coach for the Ventura College Pirates. A lifetime resident of Ventura, Cowen understands the meaning and importance of We Play Hard! Over the past 15 years, Cowen has coached 32 interscholastic teams in Ventura County (including 26 between football and basketball). Cowen's basketball coaching career began at Ventura High School from 1994-2000 where he served as an assistant coach in the boys' basketball program under Head Coach Dan Larson. He then moved to Pacifica High School as an assistant coach under Head Coach Howard Davis from 2001-2003 helping the Tritons win the first tournament in school history and first CIF playoff game. In 2004 Cowen teamed with Ann Larson at Ventura High School, together they lead the Cougars to the CIF finals and eventually the state regional final game at USC with a stunning win over nationally ranked Long Beach Poly, on the road. From 2005-2007 Cowen served as the Head Girls basketball coach at Pacifica High School. In back to back 20 win seasons the Tritons had tremendous success including: 100% graduation rate, the program's first tournament championship, and first team in the history of the Oxnard Union High School District to compete in the Division 1 state basketball playoffs (just one year removed from that tournament under Coach Larson).
Coach Cowen is currently the Athletic Director at Pacifica High School, the county's largest public high school with the highest API (academic performance index) in the city of Oxnard. He also serves as the President of the Ventura County Basketball Coaches Association and is a nationally certified instructor for coaches' education. Over the past four summers Cowen has worked as an instructor under hall of fame coach Pete Newell in tall women/big man's camps at the high school and intercollegiate levels. This summer, Cowen plans to teach at Newell's Big Man Camp in Las Vegas, NV; which includes aspiring professional player's world wide, many recently drafted in the NBA.
Cowen joins Mircetic's men's staff with a reputation of upholding high standards of integrity and ability to teach the game of basketball. He is also noted for his attention to detail, meticulous practice planning, and detailed game preparation.
