Class meetings:  Wednesday 7-9:50PM,  room 229

 Text :  Blitzer: Thinking Mathematicaly, 4th edition

 Prerequisites: Math V03 or 1year of high school intermediate algebra with grade of C or better  

Course Description:  

This course offers liberal arts students an application-oriented, problem-solving exploration into a variety of mathematical fields  

including portions of courses offered in trigonometry, college algebra, statistics, business mathematics, and precalculus.  

Schedule :

A tentative schedule is attached. This schedule may be a subject to small changes.                                                                                           It is the student’s responsibility to follow any changes in the schedule.  

Instructions  for the  class  meetings:

Please be in the classroom on time.  Take notes in your notebook at every class  and record all information,whether you know it or not.  

  Materials to be brought to each class meeting

   Notebook, textbook,  graphing paper, color pencils,  scientific calculator ( CASIO fx-115 ES or similar )

Class participation: Your participation will be an asset for you and your classmates. Class participation is encouraged                                during class discussions and  may earn you extra credit.

Absence: One absence per semester is allowed only. Five points will be deducted for every absence after the first one.  

For a student’s absence any longer than one class, it is recommended to contact instructor.  

  

Homework assignments

There will be homework assigned every class. Each homework assignment turned in on time is worth up to 10 points for a total of 150.  Homework pages are to be stapled together including a cover page that will be posted at instructor's website. 

Five points will be deducted for each homework without completely filled in  cover page OR                                                           cover page  provided with incorrect information.                          

Each problem in the homework assignments will be numbered and page number recorded  according to the textbook.                             Students will present all side calculations or considerations made during the problem solving.                                                                           The result of each problem will be boxed.  

  Quizzes

 There will be a quiz given every class meeting except the first one and  on the exam days. The quiz time will be                                        7:10-7:30 PM. Make sure to be in class on time to begin the quiz with the group promptly.                                                                                  Each quiz is worth up to 10 points for the total of 150 points.

Midterm and Final Exam

 Midterm and Final Exams will be 2 hour long.

Total number of points  is  600.

A  100  - 90 % , B  89    - 80 % C  79   -  70 % , D  69   -  60 % , F  bellow  60%.

Point score is for your orientation only. Please concentrate yourself more on the amount of knowledge you learn than on                  the amount of points you gain.

The learning experience, understanding the matter and carrying the knowledge beyond the Final exam  is the goal we aim for.
