Text :  Cynthia Y. Young : Trigonomenty

Prerequisites

Math V03 or 1year of high school intermediate algebra ( Algebra II) with grade of C or better  .

Recommended prep: Math V02 or knowledge of plane geometry

Entry skills:

A.  Solve linear equations.

B.  Solve quadratic equations.

C.  Graph first and second-degree functions.

D.  Graph conic sections.

E.  Calculate algebraic operations upon complex numbers.

Course Objective

On written timed tests the student will be able to:

A.  Set up values of trigonometric functions and inverse functions corresponding to:

1.)  angles of zero degrees, multiple of 30 and 45 degrees, and their radian

                 equivalents without calculators or tables.

           2.)  other angles using calculators.

B.  Solve problems involving right triangles.

C.  Solve problems involving radian angles and rotational motion.

D.  Solve problems with oblique triangles using the Law of Sines and the Law of

      Cosines.

E.  Construct graphs of trigonometric functions and identify period, amplitude, phase

shift, and vertical translation. Derive a equation from a given sinusoidal graph.

F.  Compare and manipulate trigonometric expressions using Fundamental Identities,

Sum and Difference Identities, Double Angle Identities and Half-Angle Identities

      from memory without supporting notes.

G.  Solve trigonometric equations.

H.  Convert complex numbers among rectangular, polar, and trigonometric form.

I.  Apply DeMoivre's Theorem to multiply, divide, and calculate roots of complex numbers.

J.  Relate and apply trigonometry in solving problems from science and engineering areas.

 Schedule

A tentative schedule is attached. This schedule may be a subject to small changes. It is the student’s responsibility to follow any changes in the schedule.

Instructions  for the  class  meetings

Please be in the classroom on time. Take notes in your notebook at every class and record all information, whether you know it or not

For each class you must bring

-textbook

-notebook and graphing paper

-scientific calculator

-compass, protractor, triangle, straight edge

Class participation

Your participation will be an asset for you and your classmates. Class participation is encouraged during class discussions and questions.

Absence

One absence per semester is allowed only. Five points will be deducted for every absence after the first one. For a student’s absence any longer than one class, it is recommended to contact instructor.

Homework assignments

There will be 4 homework assignments. Each homework assignment turned in on time is worth up to 30 points for a total of 120.

Each problem in the homework assignments will be numbered and page number recorded according to the textbook.

Students will present all side calculations or considerations made during the problem solving.  The result of each problem will

Homework pages are to be stapled together including a cover page that will be posted at instructor’s website. Five points will be deducted for each homework without completely filled in cover page OR cover page provided with incorrect information.

Homework help

I will be available to answer your questions via e-mail daily. You may choose to visit VC tutoring center or take advantage of the Willey Plus on-line resources.

Quizzes

There will be 4 quizzes during the semester. The quizzes will start at 6:10PM. Make sure to be in class on time to begin the quiz with the group promptly.

Each quiz is worth up to 36 points for the total of 144   points.

Homework assignments (4)             120 points (30 points each)

Total number of points is   564

Point score is for your orientation only. Please concentrate yourself more on the amount of knowledge you learn than on amount of points you gain.

The learning experience, understanding the  matter, and carrying the knowledge beyond the Final exam  is the goal we aim for.
