Automotive Specialties/Job Categories  

Ventura's automotive technology program can prepare students for employment in any of the following job areas:

  • Automotive Technician: can be assigned to a wide range of diagnosis, repair and service tasks. The ability to locate and diagnose problems and make the proper repairs are essential to this position.

  • Specialty Technician: specializes in a particular area of repair work. Specialties include driveablility (tune-up), electrical systems, brakes, automatic transmissions, engine repair, alignment and air conditioning.
  • Automotive Machinist: performs machining operations ranging from installing sleeves, boring cylinders, align boring blocks, turning brake drums and rotors to reconditioning cylinder heads and assembling engines.

  • Automotive Parts Person: has the responsibility of selling parts, procuring supplies and maintaining inventory. A strong background in automotive theory, good organizational and fiscal abilities are essential to this position.
  • Service Writer: greets the customer, writes repair orders and contacts customers when authorizations are needed. He also delivers the vehicle to the customer when he repairs or service have been completed.

  • Shop Foreman: is an experienced technician who has the responsibility for all repairs performed at a repair facility. The expert technician in this position supervises the staff of technicians and inspects all finished repairs.
  • Service Manager: supervises all service employees, and is responsible for customer relations. The service manager is also responsible for increasing the service departments business through advertising, sales promotions and customer satisfaction.

  • Independent Shop Owner: there is the opportunity to own an independent repair shop. Requires not only a skilled technician but a person that has the knowledge and skills necessary to operate a business.
  • Lubrication Specialist: this entry level position has the job of changing oil, lubricating the chassis and the general inspection of the vehicle. The person in this position is responsible for establishing good customer relations and repeat business for the shop.
