| Frequently Asked
Questions
How long will it take to complete
the program?
The Welding Technology curriculum is a two (2) year program
designed to acquire skills in: gas, arc, GTAW and GMAW processes as well as related math
and blueprint reading. You may elect to specialize only in a particular area which
would reduce the time frame. (See programs page.)
What career possibilities are available after
graduation?
Career possibilities will depend on the length and
concentration of training. The career opportunities are there for the student who
trains seriously to learn this competitive trade. Positions as a welder are
plentiful in construction, pipeline, aircraft, shipbuilding and hundreds of other
commercial areas. In addition, positions such as supervisors, welding inspectors,
welding engineers, layout personnel or self employment are just a few of the opportunities
that await you.
Are there any internship programs available to students
enrolled?
Yes. During the semester local industry has
frequently called for student help and apprenticeship agreements have been initiated. This
is an excellent training program that can lead to full time employment. We also
maintain contact with numerous employers who have hired our graduates in the past.
What type of salary can I expect after completion
of a certificate or AA degree?
Salary is based upon experience and education. The more
welding education you have, the better wage you can expect. Blueprint reading,
applied math and good shop skills are excellent stepping stones to higher wages.
Certifications are usually preferred for securing that special position.
Salaries range from an average of:
$7-$8 per hour for low skills
$10-$13 per hour for average skills
$15-$30 per hour for above average to high skills
Can I get certification without completing the 2
year program?
Yes. Many students have become certified welders
before their last year, have gone to work and returned at night to finish their program.
Can I begin after the semester has started?
Yes. We offer a non-credit welding program for
students who cannot attend regularly, have scheduling conflicts or need to practice for
certifications. A lab fee is required for this class.
