Course Objective:

The course provides a hands-on introduction to the basic principles of biology and covers the biochemistry, physiology, morphology, behavior, genetics, evolution, taxonomy, and ecology of living things. This course is designed for non-biology majors. Field trips may be required. Recommended to be taken with Bio V01 lecture.

Student Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, students who have succeeded in the course should be able to:
1. Use scientific instruments effectively.
2. Use the scientific method to conduct experiments.
3. Identify the relationships among chemicals, cells, and organisms.

Material:

Texts: Symbiosis, Pearson Custom Publishing Fall 2007
Calculator (cell phones or dictionary-type calculators will not be allowed on quizzes)

Labs:

You must have the correct lab manual for the course by the second day of class. Each lab is worth 20 points. You will be graded on the lab by either a quiz, by turning a lab report, or both.
Quizzes will begin in the beginning of the lab period, and will cover material from the previous lab. You will have ~15 minutes for each quiz. Quizzes are worth 10 points. Any students talking or reading other material will receive a zero on that quiz.
There are no make-up quizzes and late lab reports are not accepted without a valid excuse. If you miss a class, come prepared to take a quiz on the last lab you attended.
If a lab is missed, you will receive a zero for that lab report and/or quiz.
Your lowest lab score will be dropped. This can be a missed lab due to an emergency, or the lowest grade you receive on a particular lab.

Participation & Clean-up:

Based on attendance, participation, and cleanup. Points will be deducted for missing class, failing to participate in lab activities or leaving lab equipment in unsatisfactory condition. This portion of the grade should be no problem, but you can lower your grade one full letter by failing to do the above. Likewise, good attendance and cleanliness can help boost you to the next grade letter. These points are added at the end of the semester.

Withdrawal Policy:

Any student that misses more than two assignments before the official census will be dropped without penalty. If you decide to drop the class after the census, it is YOUR responsibility to drop the class in person through the campus Admission Office, by phone, or on-line. After the census date, I will not drop you; if you are still on the roll sheet, you will receive an "F" in Biology 1.

Academic Integrity:

Academic dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism, etc.) is forbidden and will not be tolerated in this class. If you are caught cheating your indiscretion will be reported to the college and you will receive an "F" in Biology 1.
Some examples of cheating are: talking to another student, looking at another student´s paper, sharing your answers with another student, or using notes during the exam. It is your responsibility to cover your answers during an exam and quizzes. Other students cheating off your work can have a negative impact on your grade. See Course Catalogue for more info.

Policies:

There are no make-up labs or quizzes. You are responsible for any material missed which may show up on a quiz.
A new lab manual is required for the course.
If you miss more than two labs, you will fail Bio V01L. Students who are habitually late or absent should not expect to pass this class.
You must keep all your returned papers in case I need to review them at the end of the semester.
Turn of all cell phones/pagers during class. If you are seen talking on the phone or being disruptive in any manner, you will be asked to leave the class. No food or drinks are allowed in the lab.
