In August, Coach Hoffman laid out a program that he hopes will help the team recapture the Western States Conference Championship Northern Division that was loaned out in 2006. The final goal is the same for the Lady Pirates as it has been for the last 13 years - to play their way into the State Championship game. The Lady Pirate staff and sophomore class can still taste the bitterness of its playoff loss in 2006 to eventual State Champion, Cerritos College, when poor officiating cost them a penalty kick in the 97th minute of its game which led to 2 red cards and a 3-1 loss in overtime. Coach Hoffman said, "We have a fantastic Freshman class that represents 13 Ventura County high school programs."

The VC Soccer Program suffered a loss this season that is beyond measure, the passing of alumnus Brianna Squires. Coach Hoffman provides his thoughts, “It is with great sadness and sorrow that I let all of our VC family and friends know that in September we lost alumnus Brianna Squires (01-03) at the young age of 24. Brianna was an inspiration to all of us. Brianna came to us from Buena High school where she played in very limited games due to series of head injuries. When Bre arrived at Ventura College she sat down and talked to the ‘ICEMAN,’ Mark Chaney, who told her not to worry, he would help her to get released to play for VC. I remember how excited she was that day! It seems just like yesterday, wow!! Brianna played four games that season before a knee injury took her dream away for another year. As always, Brianna would not give up or back down, she worked very hard in the off-season and got her knee healthy. The rest was history - Brianna Squires ended up playing over 50 games for her beloved Lady Pirates the next season. Her commitment, achievements and name will never be forgotten at VC. As a lady pirate, Brianna Squires showed how great of a student she was by winning the Raeann Koerner Academic award her sophomore year with a 4.1 GPA. This year’s team is honoring Brianna by wearing the #15 on their uniforms and Alyssa McDonald has changed her number from #22 to play in the #15 shirt that Bre wore 2001-2003. Bre’s memory will live on through her VC family and friends. The lady pirates will re-name their most inspirational player award to the Brianna Squires Most Inspirational Player Award. God Bless Brianna #15. I know you will be watching your Lady Pirates in every game they play."

News
The Lady Pirates made their 12th appearance in post season Southern California Regional Championsions and suffered the most devestating loss in their 12 year history. The Pirates were leading the #2 seed, Cerritos College, with time up when two unbelieveable things happened. First, the referee added six minutes of injury time that I do not believe were correct. Second, the referee gave a undeserved penalty kick and ejected the VC Goalkeeper. Cerritos College scored tying the game. After this, the game went into overtime with the Lady Pirates down a player. The referee's next decision was a final blow when Marisol Arevalo was ejected in the 5th minute of overtime. This left the Lady Pirates playing the final 25 minutes of the game with only 9 players. Although the team held strong until the 110th minute, Cerritos broke the tie and went on to be the Lady Pirates 3-1 scoring the last goal in the 119th minute of the game. THis game was played by two excellent teams and should have been decided on by the performance of the teams on the field and not a series of bad decisions costing the Lady Pirates their season.

The coaching staff of the Ventura College Women's Soccer team are extremely proud of the 2007 Lady Pirates. The esprit de corps that they demonstrated on and off the field will put the team down in history. They have left a legacy of future teams to follow.

WE PLAYED HARD.

Until next season.
